Vesuvius Cherry Tomato (“Pomodorino del PIennolo”) is obtained by the ecotype Lycopersicon Esculentum tomato. The producing area is located all around the Vesuvius. The cherry tomatoes must be handpicked, from June 20th to August 31st, maximum production is 25 tonnes per hectare. The product may be stored with the typical “piennolo” method: the bunches are tied in a circle on a plant fiber twine, in such a way as to create a single, large bunch. The “piennolo” bunches made this way must be hung above ground in a dry, ventilated place using hooks or appropriate supports. The P.D.O. (Protected Designation of Origin) status has been awarded and registered with Reg. (UE) n. 1238 on November 12, 2009, published on G.U.C.E. n. 332, L series of December 17, 2009.
